Rooksbridge to Brean

 29/05/21

It's been a while. Since lockdown had been eased a few weeks before, we had been walking to surrounding villages in search of open pubs. As more pubs had re-opened, it was time to restart this journey. The Falcon service back to Rooksbridge seemed the obvious choice. From there it was over the motorway to Eastertown. The back roads were quite busy and we ignored the occasional sign on the footpaths suggesting that we shouldn't enter private property to arrive at the Hobbs Boat.

Attached to a Premier Inn, it is clearly setup for their customers. After going through the regulatory checks, we were shown to our table and consumed two pints of Doom Bar (4%) for £7.70. It was just before noon and there were no other customers, but the beer was fine.

The straightest way to our next stop would have taken us along a busy country road with no footpath. So for health and safety reasons, we took a quieter route via the Anchor at Bleadon (in North Somerset!). The back road from there was busier than expected, but we diverted off onto the new Brean to Weston cyclepath. This was a bank holiday weekend, so Brean was busy and so was the Brean Down Inn.

We elected to sit inside where it was quieter and nearer the bar. Still took a while to get served and we had two pints of Butcombe (4%) for £7.40.

We weren't aware of any more Somerset pubs/bars north of here so we headed onto the beach and walked south. The tide was out and it was quieter than the road. We intended to go to the Seagull Inn, but it wasn't open and so the next bar was The Place.

It's not a pub, but this is Brean. I had a John Smiths, I think. It was £8.20 for two pints. There were plenty of attentive staff though. We could have walked on to Burnham, but it would have cost quite a bit more in bus fares to get home. So we decided to have one more pint and head back to the A38.

The Tavern was visible from the road even if it is in one of the holiday parks. Sounds like a pub, so we went in. It wasn't ofcourse, it was just a large hall. Very slow service and short measures. We eventually had two pints of Tribute (4.2%) for £8.20.

We now had to head towards Brent Knoll. We had hoped to go in the Red Cow, but thanks to our last pint, that would have cut it a bit fine before catching the bus home.
