Minehead to Culbone

7/8/21

Bus to Minehead to start and then we walked along the back roads towards Selworthy. It started to rain before we arrived in the village. We then crossed the A39 and walked cross country to West Luccombe. It was still raining. We were very wet by the time we trudged into Porlock.

We managed to find some wooden chairs in The Royal Oak in an attempt not to leave too much mess. We had pints of Doom (4%), Tribute (4.2%) and Tarka (4%) for £11.50 as some families came into lunch.

Not much further along the High Street is The Castle.

Here we had two pints of Courage Best (4%) and a Beaky Blinder (4.8%) for £11.10 in another pub doing meals.

Further again along the High Street, at the bottom of Porlock Hill, is The Ship Inn.

It was busy in here and they had a fine selection of real ales. We had two pints of Proper Ansome (4.2%) and a Proper Job (4.5%) for £11.75.

Rather than heading up the hill yet, we took the footpath to Porlock Weir. There is another The Ship Inn, sometimes referred to as the Bottom Ship.

It was busy here as well. We had pints of Pitchfork (4.3%), Prickly Geezer (4.4%) and Otter Amber (4%) for £11.50.

Then it was uphill. We took the coastpath as far Worthy, then up Worthy Combe and then up further still to the A39 opposite The Culbone Stables Inn.

It is more of a restaurant with rooms now. We had to settle for three bottles of Tribute for £11.50, I think. The lady behind the bar was friendly though.

There is a bus stop somewhere here, but we could not see any sign and there is no verge on the side of the road we wanted to board. So we stood at the entrance of the pub car park and waved when we saw the bus coming. It is usually an open topped bus for the tourists between Doniford/Minehead and Ilfracombe. Not today though, but they still charged £8 single back to Minehead.
